“Our patient population is small,” said Peter Cohen, president of the National Community Pharmacists Association. “We believe that the settlement will help us expand our understanding of Nexium’s safety profile and how we will be able to provide the treatment it is approved for in the U. S.”
The pharmaceutical company and Pfizer are negotiating a settlement on behalf of a patient group, known as the Patients’ Health Network, that includes those who have been diagnosed with acid reflux disease and other health problems.
The settlements are part of a global effort to make heartburn medication affordable, Cohen said.
Under the settlement, Pfizer will pay about $6.9 billion to resolve the litigation, while other drug makers and pharmaceutical companies will pay about $1.2 billion, said the agreement.
The settlement includes $2.3 billion in out-of-pocket payments to patients and $2.3 billion in out-of-pocket payments to the National Community Pharmacists Association. Pfizer’s drug plan also includes a $2.1 billion payment to the National Community Pharmacists Association for the treatment of acid reflux disease. Pfizer also will pay $1.8 billion to treat the drug’s heartburn and acid regurgitation.
Patient groups and others who participate in the settlement include the National Community Pharmacists Association, the American Heart Association, the Canadian Pharmacists Association, the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists and the American Heart Association.
The settlement will allow Pfizer to continue to be the largest maker of prescription medicines for patients diagnosed with heartburn and acid reflux disease, as well as the top pharmaceutical company in the United States.
